Our story

How buel was created.

Meet the founder.

Hi there - I'm Scott, a Melbourne based designer and the founder of buel.

I have three adorable tabby cats, all siblings (two boys and a girl), who are endless enjoyment and entertainment.

Let me tell you about how buel came to be.

It all started with ants.

A few years ago, Melbourne was inundated with ants. After many frustrated mornings discovering ants had again taken over the food bowls of our three cats, it was time for a solution. This is what we tried.

A simple plate, filled with a little water to form a moat. It actually worked, sort of.

But the plate was easy to step on (water and biscuits flying everywhere!), and it's not, shall we say, the most attractive option.

A typical anti-ant bowl, mass produced.

Pictured is an "ant proof" bowl from a large retailer. You likely would have seen similar versions online / in other stores.

Good in theory, a moat around the food which holds water, but the food falls in the water, swells up, and the ants then (I believe happily) use this as a little bridge to reach the prize. Not good.

We developed our own ant-proof pet bowl.

Through the product development process, I estimate we did about 15 to 20 major versions, and easily a few hundred minor versions.

We've tested these bowls extensively and are very pleased to be able to share buel with you and your furry friends.

We hope you like it.

Happy pets, hungry ants!
